Glulam arches are very versatile structural systems for creating long spans. Glulam arch bridges have been used for hundreds of years in Europe. Arches are an efficient and cost effective form of construction, particularly if the curved shape is required for functional or aesthetic reasons, in fact arches are the most efficient structural form for carrying uniform vertical loads. Laminated Timber competes very favourably with other materials because of the relative ease of manufacturing large curved timber members.

The arches usually form the main structural members of the bridge. The platform can either sit on top of the arch or hang below the arched members. Longitudinal girders are normally still needed though be reduced in size due to the arches taking the majority of the load.
