Glulam is manufactured from small pieces of timber, bonded together to form the desired size of beam. Due to this, virtually any size of beam can be achieved - the main limitation is the practicality of transporting. Timberbond has manufactured solid beams 2.0 metres deep (6.6 ft) and and over 400mm wide (15.7") To avoid the difficulty of transporting long lengths (generally over 20.0 metres (65 ft), connections can be designed to allow for reconnecting on site.

The depth of glulam beams (except those that are curved) are typically manufactured by adding additional 45mm (1.77") laminations. This means that the depth of the beams increase in 45mm increments. The reason for this is because Timberbond's standard raw stock is 50mm x "width of the beam". The 50mm section then gets gauged on both surfaces to create a good bonding surface. During the gauging process it takes the lamination down to 45mm, hence the 45mm increments. .
