Though additional height clearance was not a parameter of the job, the designer saw benefits in the efficiency of long unsupported spans. This brought the cost and time frame for construction down considerably for the job due to not having to install floor joists etc. Also, by having a lighter floor system meant that the supporting beams could be smaller.
